Chinese Six-Panel Coromandel Screen - Late 19th Century

Magnificent Chinese six-panel folding screen crafted in the prestigious Coromandel lacquer technique, dating from the late 19th century (circa 1870-1900). This exceptional decorative piece features:

  • Six hinged panels creating an impressive room divider approximately 6 feet in height
  • Classic black lacquer ground meticulously built up through multiple layers
  • Exquisite mother-of-pearl and soapstone inlay work against the deep ebony background
  • Intricate scenes depicting elegant court ladies and scholars in garden settings
  • Detailed architectural elements including pavilions and decorative bridges
  • Delicate floral motifs and bamboo elements rendered in fine inlay work
  • Traditional circular medallions at the bottom of each panel containing artfully arranged scholarly objects and antique vessels
  • Decorative border with subtle pearl-like inlay creating a framing effect
  • Meticulous craftsmanship showcasing the kiao-tzu (carved lacquer) technique

This impressive screen exemplifies the refined Coromandel style, named after the Coromandel Coast of India from which these screens were often shipped to European markets. The artistic technique, known as kuancai in Chinese, involves applying multiple layers of lacquer which are then carved and inlaid to create these intricate pictorial scenes.

The detailed imagery depicts scenes from classical Chinese literature and court life, showing elegant ladies in various scholarly and leisurely pursuits. The circular medallions at the bottom typically represent the "hundred antiques" motif, displaying precious objects valued by Chinese scholars and collectors.

Screens of this size and quality were luxury items commissioned for wealthy households, often serving as status symbols as well as practical room dividers. The late 19th century was a period when particularly fine examples were created for both domestic Chinese elite and growing Western markets fascinated by Asian decorative arts.

This exceptional example would make a dramatic statement piece in a refined interior, providing both historical significance and artistic beauty. Its condition and comprehensive pictorial narrative make it a collector's item of notable value and cultural importance.
